The St. Ignatius Music Department offers a thoughtfully designed curriculum and well-equipped music rooms to nurture students’ musical abilities and provide opportunities for every individual to shine.

Musical Highlights

  • Choir: The St. Ignatius Vocal Harmony group is renowned across the island for its exceptional dedication and captivating performances. Frequently invited to perform at the Harquail Theatre, they have collaborated with the Cayman National Choir and contribute to the community through events like Candlelight service and Remembrance day.
  • Choirs and Ensembles: With two orchestras (beginner and advanced), a concert band, a jazz band, and regularly formed quartets and small performance groups, music plays a central role in every event hosted by the school.
  • Spiritual Enrichment: Selected students contribute to the school’s spiritual life by supporting the music provision at weekly Mass.
  • Concert Excellence: Students enjoy a wealth of performance opportunities throughout the year, from music-focused concerts like Christmas and Summer Concerts to broader community events such as the Candlelight Service, Spring Fling, and Graduation.
  • Annual Musical Theatre Experience: The annual school production is a highly anticipated event for both students and the community.
  • National Recognition: Our students consistently excel in national music competitions, earning titles such as “Cayman Musician of the Year” and achieving Gold and Silver awards at NCFA.

Key Stage 3 & 4

KS3 (Key Stage 3) Music Curriculum:

The KS3 music curriculum emphasizes three main areas: string instruments, band, and “Musical Futures.”

  • Strings and Band: Students continue to develop as performers on instruments chosen during their primary years, with continued access to their own instrument during lessons for all students. The curriculum is designed to foster technical growth, cultural exposure, and creativity. For instance, topics like Discover Your Instrument focus on building technical skills, while World Music and Blues introduce cultural diversity through skills of improvisation and composition.
  • Musical Futures: This program caters to students who demonstrate promise in pop music instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and voice) through extracurricular activities. The curriculum follows similar topics to strings and band, but through exploration of pop music from different decades and cultures, emphasizing creativity and performance.
  • Performance Opportunities: KS3 students participate in compulsory ensemble performances at Christmas and Summer Concerts, with additional opportunities for solo and small ensemble performances at events like Talent Show, Graduation, NCFA, etc.

 

KS4 (Cambridge IGCSE Music):

The IGCSE Music program strikes a perfect balance between theory and creative expression. It consists of three key components:

  1. Appraisal: Students learn the theoretical aspects of various music genres, including classical and world music. A Year 11 exam combines multiple-choice and short-answer questions, relying on attentive listening and the ability to spot finer musical details.
  2. Composition: Students create two compositions—one free and one brief-based—using MuseScore software (provided on their school laptops). They receive guidance throughout the process, from developing ideas to creating a polished musical score.
  3. Performance: Students complete a 4-minute performance consisting of both solo and ensemble pieces, showcasing their musical skills and teamwork.

 

The program also develops transferable skills such as time management, organization, communication, critical thinking, and resilience.

Sixth Form Music

Our Sixth Form offers the Eduqas A Level Music program, providing students with an in-depth understanding of music.
  • Coursework: Students build a portfolio featuring original compositions and carefully prepared performances, while the examination tests listening skills, analysis, score-reading and essay-writing.
  • Curriculum: Students explore the theory and history of classical, jazz/pop, and 20th Century music, gaining deeper analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Extracurricular Opportunities: Sixth Form students actively participate in choir, orchestra, concert band, and student ensembles, as well as the annual school production. They also develop leadership skills by organizing events like House Music.
  • Outreach and Enrichment: Beyond the classroom, students attend concerts and music-related events, collaborating with organizations like the Cayman Arts Festival and the Cayman National Choir and Orchestra. These experiences broaden their musical horizons and cultural understanding.
