✈️ Chicago Trip ✈️

This weekend, the A’level science class flew to the city of Chicago for their residential trip, and what a memorable adventure they had. Here’s a recap of their exciting journey.

Chicago Day 1:

  • Flight from Cayman 🛫
  • Deep Dish Pizza at Gino’s East 🍕 – Chicago Style!
  • City Tour 🏙️ – Our tour guide shared fascinating facts, like how they reversed the direction of the Hudson River due to pollution.
  • Walmart Visit 🛒 – Stocked up on our favorite American snacks and treats.
  • Hotel Check-in and Rest 🛌 – Ready for day 2!

Chicago Day 2:

Today was jam-packed with all sorts of activities!

  • Museum of Science and Industry 🏛️ – Interactive exhibits including a mirror maze, a swirling simulated tornado, and a captured U-505 submarine from WW2!
  • Adler Planetarium 🌌 – Enjoyed stunning city views across the lake and watched an incredible show in the sky dome.
  • Downtown Retail Therapy 🛍️ – Some shopping fun before dinner.
  • Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe 🍔
  • Millennium Park 🌳 – Visited the famous Bean and the ‘spitting fountains’ featuring faces of real Chicagoans.
  • Buckingham Fountain 🌇 – Ended the day with a beautiful sunset before heading back to the hotel.

What a day! Looking forward to more adventures tomorrow. 🌟

Chicago Day 3:

Our day started off with a trip to FERMILab, a national laboratory at the forefront of particle physics research. We had a guided tour of the facility, gaining insights into ongoing research on neutrino oscillations and muons. We met a control room operator who shared his day-to-day experiences and his journey to becoming a particle accelerator operator. We also had the pleasure of hearing from Don Lincoln, one of FERMILab’s premier scientists, who explained the science behind their work.

Next, we attended a workshop at the University of Illinois with Professors Laura Schaposnik and James Unwin. Professor Schaposnik, a researcher into geometric properties of different spaces, spoke about her research and journey to becoming a professor in mathematics. Professor Unwin, a theoretical physicist, discussed the possibility of a black hole in our solar system. Our students then engaged in a hands-on session with knot theory, guided by PhD students.

From there, we visited the Field Museum, encountering fossils, mummies, and Sue the T-Rex! 🦖

We then ascended Willis Tower, learning about Chicago’s history before enjoying spectacular city views from 110 floors up (thankfully, via an elevator!) 🏙️.

Our next stop was Navy Pier, where we enjoyed shops and rides. Thanks to funds from the HSA’s Dunk Tank at Spring Fling, we provided the students with ride passes, including the huge Ferris Wheel 🎡.

Finally, we dined at Maggiano’s in our own private suite before heading back to the hotel 🍝.

The students were exemplary and were a credit to us and their families.

Thank you to Ms Gill, the science department, all staff involved and the students.
